[Policy brief 5]

Pests are an important threat to food production, in some cases destroying as much as one quarter of annual crops. In order to fight pests, farmers in Bangladesh heavily rely on pesticides, with potentially negative implications for agriculture, the environment and human health. However, solutions to chemical pest control exist. In different parts of the country, so-called “Integrated Pest Management” (IPM) has helped to reduce the use of chemicals and even increase yields.
