Structure, conduct and performance of the rice market and the impact of technological changes in milling

Research Grant Reports

The volatility of rice prices in the past few years in Bangladesh and international markets has had negative impacts on poor farmers and consumers resulting in policy concern over the efficient functioning of the marketing system. The study aimed to provide evidence on rice market structure, conduct and performance in Bangladesh and analyze the impacts of technological change in the rice milling sector on employment, the financial viability of semi-automatic mills, market concentration, rice quality, and costs of milling. Estimates of costs and margins for key agents along the rice marketing chain in Bangladesh and analysis of market integration between domestic and international markets have also been constructed. Policy implications for improving market structure, conduct and performance have been further identified.
