Regional difference in production and required of foodgrain in Bangladesh

Technical Report

The national aggregates of production and requirement of foodgrain provide summary statistics and hide considerable differences in production, requirement and consumption at regional and sub-regional levels. A comparison of regional production levels with requirements gives a rough indication of the regional production gaps and thereby help in the identification of surplus and deficit status of the regions. A comparison of actual consumption levels with foodgrain requirements on the other hand, represents availability gap. The difference between the production gap and availability gap for each region provides a crude measure of the effect of imports, private marketing, public procurement and distribution on foodgrain availability.
